An Afternoon All About Avening

The Kestrels had a fantastic end to our topic.  We made Avening Apple Cake and invited all the Mummies and Daddies in to try it and to share all our learning.

What was the school like a long time ago?

Friday, October 14th, 2016

We invited Mr Ind and Mrs Woodman into The Kestrels so we could interview them about Avening School.  They both came here as children.  We prepared lots of questions to ask them and learnt a lot about what it was like when they were children.  Mr Ind told us that the school was built in 1841, that’s 175 years ago!  The boys toilets were outside without a roof, there were no school trips but in the winter the boys were allowed to pour buckets of water on the top playground to make ice slides!  The girls weren’t allowed to join in as they had to play in the bottom playground!

Mrs Woodman remembered that there was a stove in the corner of The Kestrels’ classroom to keep the children warm and they used to have a nap at lunchtime!  Ms McKenzie thought that was a good idea!

5000m World Challenge

Thursday, October 6th, 2016

The whole school went up to the field to take part in the World 5000m Challenge.  There are 45 children in The Kestrels and The Eagles so each child ran relays of 100m each and then some Year 2 volunteers ran further so we managed the 5000m!
